“Take care of your employees, and they’ll take care of your business” - Richard Branson

Communication is the lifeline for all organizations. The time has gone when having only technical knowledge was important to retain your jobs in any company. The globalized economy has changed the business dynamics in the last three decades, mainly in the last decade, where getting work done effectively has become more crucial than having merely technical skills.

Besides having analytical and problem-solving skills, and R&D, today’s corporate world also expecting effective communication skills, management skills, soft skills, confidence, and understanding of various cultures for better interpersonal skills for growth-oriented organizations.

The growing importance of oral and written communication skills by employers has been echoed internationally in the last decade, therefore ignoring these crucial skills may endanger your professional career ahead and it may cause a major hurdle in professional growth.

We have seen, Indian engineers lack these serviceable skills and presentation skills and they need to work hard to improve these skills to stand this competitive world. The globalized economy demands high-quality communication skills, soft skills, and interpersonal skills from our graduates and professionals for better professional growth.

We have noticed that in India, Management, commerce, and literature graduates realized the importance of communication skills and soft skills at the college level itself, but our engineering graduates failed to realize the same, which is one of the major hurdles for a growth-oriented career. Keeping this subject in the mind, I decided to write this blog to show the ground reality and why they must start working on their communication before entering the industry.

For engineering students or working Engineers their college assignment, projects, technical and mathematical knowledge is very crucial to get entry into engineering companies or to get other jobs, but how far and how early you excel your professional growth entirely depends on the individual’s communication skills.

Good communication skills do not only help in getting routine promotion in the company but also help in getting leadership roles inside the company, professionals working on leadership and managerial roles are paid a high salary.

Let me share my own experience, one of our leading clients have given us a mandate for GM-Projects in NCR region for high rise projects, we were specifically told by the client to look engineers whose communication skills are good. While working on the requirement, I have realized that majority of the engineers whom I have contacted regarding this opening, 80% of them were lacking in their communication skills. Therefore our engineering graduates must see that only having technical knowledge is not enough to excel in your career and to grab the highly paid leadership position in the company.

Recently I was doing a talent hunt for Fresh Mechanical and civil Engineers for one of the MNC for Sales Engineer, the company was shortlisting candidates based on candidates’ communication skills so that he/she can communicate with clients effectively and should be capable enough to explain the technical aspects of the products properly.

Along with Engineering and technical knowledge, they must work on their overall presentation and personality development, Writing skills (Email Writing, Document writing, Reports making), oral communication skills (effectively communicate with team members and external clients) and effective Listening skills (is very crucial skills to understand clients and top management requirement & meet their expectations) for the growth-oriented career.

We can’t entirely blame the students for lacking in good communication skills and presentation skills alone but our engineering colleges must include the soft skills, English communication, and interpersonal skills in its curriculum and conduct regular workshops by inviting working professionals from the industry to prepare students before stepping in the market. One can also approach www.irsstaffing.net for any such workshops and training.
